Green Star Farm's Story

A regenerative system employing animals to aid in the healthy improvement of our soil ecosystem.

Green Star Farm is an 85 acre pasture based livestock farm in West Sonoma County, California. We produce pasture fed eggs, chicken, pork, lamb, and goat throughout the year. We practice holistic management intensive rotational grazing methods with the intent of improving the health of our topsoil microbiome and increasing carbon. Our goal is to create a regenerative system at our farm that employs animals to aid in the healthy improvement of our soil ecosystem.

Our farmer Sarah has been on the cutting edge of diverse agriculture since 2008. Leveraging her science education and initial employment with Sonoma State University, Sarah began a life focused on science-based agriculture. After just a few years running a successful pet-sitting business, Sarah began full-time ranching in 2011.

Sarah was recently awarded CAFF's 2023 Climate Smart Farmer of the Year.

Because going back to some old ways to solve new problems is not mainstream agriculture, Sarah constantly faces unique challenges that are both educational and entertaining.

What Our Animals Eat

At Green Star Farm, we feed our animals with care, integrity, and a commitment to the land.

While we are not certified organic due to the high costs involved, all of our animals are raised on diets that follow organic standards. We prioritize sourcing local, clean, and ethically-produced feed that supports the health of our animals, our soil, and your table.

🐑 Sheep & 🐐 Goats

Our sheep and goats are 100% grass-fed. They graze rotationally on pasture and are supplemented with hay grown here on the farm. No grain, no additives—just high-quality forage that nourishes both the animals and our soil.

🐖 Hogs

Our hogs enjoy a diverse, natural diet that includes:

  • Fresh produce (often farm seconds or gleaned from local markets)
  • Organic bread
  • A corn- and soy-free, non-GMO grain blend made by our local feed mill, BarAle

This mix reduces food waste and keeps our pigs happy and healthy, producing pork that’s clean and richly flavored.

🥚 Laying Hens

Our hens have 24-hour access to pasture and are constantly on the move in our mobile coops. Their supplemental feed is a certified organic, soy-free grain from BarAle.

This balanced, clean diet leads to delicious, golden-yolked eggs you can feel good about eating.

🍗 Broiler Chickens

Our broilers are raised on pasture in our bottomless, solar-powered ROVA Barns, which move daily to give the birds fresh forage and a clean environment. These automated pasture shelters are a key part of our regenerative farming practices.

They are supplemented with a certified organic, soy-free grain ration, which we are proud to continue offering for now.

Starting October 2025, we’ll introduce a second broiler option due to supply chain challenges over the last several years:

Broilers fed a “low-soy” organic grain—a custom blend developed with BarAle to support healthy chick growth when soy-free grains are no longer feasible.

  • This new ration contains just 20% soy (compared to the conventional 35%)
  • The rest of the protein comes from field peas and fish meal
  • The feed is still certified organic and crafted to maintain clean, ethical nutrition

Why It Matters

We believe that thoughtful feed choices are central to regenerative farming. Every ingredient we feed is chosen not just for nutrition, but for how it affects animal welfare, soil health, and long-term environmental resilience.
